Goals


New products are developed from reliable industrial processes. This course deals with three types of technologies which are essential in supporting integrated design approaches: risk management and uncertainties, innovation techniques and rapid product development techniques.

• Pilot a product development project and deal with technical risks
• Master the product development cycle
• Allow for innovation in the design project (innovative techniques, choice of materials)
• Master some of the rapid product development technologies (retro-design, multi-sensory simulations, rapid prototyping)

Lectures (16 x 1.5 hours):

• Introduction (1.5 hours) (PMB)
• Risk management in design project (6 hours): FMEA, dependability, design of experiments, reliability (ThB, MLJ)
• The process of product development (3 hours) (EB)
• Innovation techniques (4.5 hours): innovation methods (PMB)
• Choice of materials (4.5 hours) (GC)
• Rapid prototyping and retro-design (6 hours): technology available and applications, properties of parts produced, rapid tooling (PM)

Tutorials (28 x 1.5 hours):

• Risk management in design project (7.5 hours) (ThB, MLJ)
• Experiment designs (6 hours) (MLP)
• Development process (6 hours) (EB)
• Innovation techniques (12 hours): TRIZ (PMB, JFB)
• Choice of materials (3 hours): applications (GC)
• Rapid prototyping and retro-design (9 hours): setting up the machine (PM)

Practical work (6 x 1.5 hours):

• Rapid prototyping and retro-design (3 hours): setting up 'stratoconception' on the machine and a 3D scanner (PM,PMB)
• Using material databases (6h)



Prerequisites

Design studio, project management, manufacturing technologies

Tests

  • Exam (3 hours) + assessemnt of a mini-project + a report from tutorials
