Goal(s)

To master the English language and the diverse techniques of oral communication (debating, giving advice or a recommendation etc.)
To develop the techniques of improvisation and/or theatre
To develop the techniques of debating
To read quickly and thoroughly in English so that all types of documents drawn from various sources can be understood
To be able to write in a variety of professional situations
To make a presentation efficiently
To use critical thinking and general knowledge, as well as awareness of the major challenges of the contemporary world, in order to enrich written and oral communication
Methodology: know how to present commentaries and analyses in a coherent and efficient manner

Preparation for and participation in the Grenoble-INP Competition, "Ultimate CV"
Introduction to improvisation/theatre
Oxford-style Debates
Analysis of journalistic articles and writing articles (facts, comments, strategies etc.)
Oral presentation in a group of a scientific article

In addition:
Autonomous study of 3 Units of "Minimum Competence in Scientific English (MCSE)"
Autonomous study of VALET (learning programme set up by the PERFORM group of Grenoble-INP)
IF necessary, autonomous preparation for BULATS Listening and Reading Test in the Library and Language Labs.

Prerequisites

Division into 4 groups of roughly equivalent level (B1 to C1)

Test

  • Specific credits: this course brings 3.0 ECTS to students in Semester 7
  • Specific credits: this course brings 3.0 ECTS to students in Semester 7

Continuous assessment = 80% of which:
20% - Improvisation/theatre;
20% - Debates;
10% - Oral presentation of a scientific article;
10% - Grammar/Vocabulary exercises (MCSE units);
20% - Rest of the programme, attendance and participation in class);
Exam = comprehension of written documents > article.

N1 = 80% CC (voir Evaluation sous Descriptions) + 20% E1

N1 = note finale session 1
Contrôle continu (CC) - La note de CC ne se rattrape pas : activités du programme, assiduité et participation en classe et au laboratoire de langues, contrôle des acquisitions
Évaluation session 1 (E1) = examen écrit : compréhension de documents écrits > article
