The doctorate is research training leading to the degree of Doctor. It takes three years or more depending on the discipline.

The doctorate is a real professional experience, allowing to open up to other practices such as management and communication. It allows access to careers in public or private research, but also in all sectors that require analytical and synthesis skills, rigor, autonomy, creativity, perseverance and implement complex issues.

Preparing for a doctorate is demanding work which involves different actors and which engages the doctoral student in high-level scientific research.

Thesis admission

You can apply for a Doctorate in Industrial Engineering (Doctorat - Spécialité Génie industriel) if you have a Master's Degree (M2). This Doctorate is a Research Degree which officially lasts three years and includes an extensive thesis.
  • The programme is managed by the Doctoral College of Grenoble University (Ecole Doctorale Ingénierie - Matériaux Mécanique Energétique Environnement Procédés Production' (I-MEP2). For more information in French on this school: EDI-MEP2 websit.
  • The theses are financed by grants (funding from the French Ministry of Higher Education, regional grants or industrial contracts such as CIFRE ('Conventions Industrielles de Formation par la Recherche'). For more information in French on industrial contracts: ANRT website.
Postgraduate careers include: expert engineer in a particular field, work in industrial R&D departments, researcher or academic supervisor.


EIT Manufacturing Doctoral School : Turn your thesis into a startup

The EIT Manufacturing Doctoral School supports PhD students in transforming their research results or patents into marketable solutions. This programme is open to our Phd students and is a complementary programme on the PhD studies

The Innovation and Entrepreneurship programme take place from April to December every year.
They are delivered in blended mode with online activities along the year and three on site events as below:
  • Spring School: April 3 to 16, 2024 in Bratislava, Slovakia
  • Summer School: July 2024 (dates and place yet to be decided)
  • Winter School: November – December 2024 (dates and place yet to be decided)
