This Master's program is meant to train professional experts in Sustainable Industrial Engineering, able to deploy skills in a global industrial environment.
Industry is of critical importance for the global economy. Industrial engineering is the branch of engineering designed for the efficient production of industrial goods as affected by elements such as plant and procedural design, the management of materials and energy, and the integration of human resources within the overall system.

Sustainable Industrial Engineering addresses the issue of industrial sustainability using different approaches, i.e. from an environmental, social, societal and economical point of view. Sustainable Industrial Engineering has myriads of application fields since it encompasses the whole value chain and lifecycle of products: from the development of new and innovative machines, products-services to the market and recyclability.

The master SIE also welcomes second-year students involved in the SUMA European Master Program (SUMA: SUstainable MAterials).

In second year, you have the choice between 2 majors. One of them is: Sustainable Operational Management

Industry today is facing major challenges driven by the high environmental impact of the human activities. Among the major challenges, industry must reduce its impact on the environment and adopt a low carbon footprint trail. The Sustainable Industrial Management Major investigates the key domains that will give the students tools to deal with these challenges and provides a systemic and interdisciplinary understanding of the situation. Major topics are sustainable supply chain management, data analytics, operational excellence, socio-economic aspects of sustainability for industry 4.0. There is a significant amount of research to be carried out still and this major offers the opportunity to follow a research-oriented path that opens up to a doctoral program. The Industrial path allows to directly claim for a job in industry. Our lectures are at the cutting edge of knowledge and involve teachers from our affiliated research laboratories, such as G-SCOP for industrial engineering (both supply chain and product development), CERAG for management sciences, PACT for sociology and GAEL for industrial economics.

School environment

Most courses will be provided at Génie Industriel, the Industrial Engineering school of the Grenoble INP group. The school is centrally located in downtown Grenoble.

You will have access to high-technology platforms.

Student life in Grenoble is very rich and dynamic (Grenoble is classified N°1 for studies in France – Palmarès des villes étudiantes 2013-2014). Students have the opportunity to follow their interests whether it be in sports (leading region for mountain sports), arts, non-profit organizations, international relations, or other activities.

  • Training partners

    Each student will be expected to complete an internship either in an industrial firm or in a research laboratory, in France or abroad. This internship will be an opportunity to consolidate and discover working methods and to learn how to manage real projects. A written dissertation will be required at the end of the training period and it will have to be defended before an examinations board.

Entry requirements

Who can apply?

Students wishing to apply to the SIE Master program must hold a Bachelor of Science, a Bachelor of Engineering Degree, or equivalent in:

  • Industrial Engineering
  • Supply Chain, Operations Management, Logistics and Transportation, Operational Research
  • Manufacturing Science, Product Design, Product Development, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering
  • Computer Science, Information Systems

Recruitment Criteria

  • Entry level 1st year if BSc.
  • Entry level 2nd year, only for the Research oriented track, if MSc. in Industrial Engineering or equivalent and B2 minimum level of French
  • English proficiency
  • Excellent academic results

Steps to apply


All the applications will be studied in our Commission of Accreditation of Academic Acquisitions (CVAA).

Applications will be examined by commissions on the following dates:

  • 11/02/2022 (Application deadline - 04/02/2022)
  • 11/03/2022 (Application deadline - 04/03/2022)
  • 15/04/2022 (Application deadline - 07/04/2022)

If your application is accepted, you will be contacted for an interview (usually by videoconference). The interview will be conducted in English.

Registration Fees 2022/2023

  • Students from outside the EU: 5000 €/ year (National fees 3770 € + Specific fees 1230 €) + 92 € "Student and campus life contribution"
  • European students: 1473 €/year (National fees 243 € + Specific fees 1230 €) + 92 € "Student and campus life contribution"

To be taken into account! The cost of living for a student in France is about 700€ per month.

Coming into effect of differentiated fees for the academic year 2021/2022: the rule incurring the payment of differentiated fees by non-E.U. students will come into effect at the beginning ot the academic year 2021-2022. This rule will also apply to students who were registered at other Grenoble Alpes University institutions in 2020/2021, and who wish to register at Grenoble INP in 2021/2022. The total amount of the owed registration fees is not necessarily to be paid at the beginning of the academic year: an instalment plan of payment may be set up. If your personal situation justifies it, a partial or total exemption may be decided upon request to the Student Social Commission.


To obtain information on the scholarships, please click on the following link. Very few scholarships are awarded each year and they are awarded on merit. We will study your results and, if your level allows it, we will direct your file towards the most suitable scholarship.


As courses are taught in English, minimum level of English is required: B2 (+ minimum level of French required B2 for a 2nd year application). If you are not in a position to provide a valid English proficiency test, IEM will pay for a Linguaskill test. Other English proficiency certificates are also accepted: LINGUASKILL, TOEFL, TOIC, IELTS, CLES.

Official University certificates are accepted to attend the Master program, BUT NOT to validate the Master degree course (at the end of the 2-year-program). French is not mandatory in order to take SIE courses. However, you may get enrolled in French courses throughout the whole academic year. We draw your attention to the fact that the command of French will turn out very useful when you will start seeking for an Internship.

Expected learning outcomes

MSc SIE helps tomorrow’s industrial engineers to work collaboratively in a globalized international context, with societal constraints as well as environmental and economical impacts.

The SIE Master programme leans on the knowledge triangle Education-Research-Innovation.

It is designed to cover the whole value chain and lifecycle of product and service, from Innovation draft, through to Distribution, in an international context. (See figure 1)It aims at tackling the key issues that are sustainable manufacturing industry, innovation, and sustainability.

Additional skills and competences are also addressed e.g. in marketing and management as it is key knowledge for the today and tomorrow industrial engineers.



SIE targets 2 main profiles:

  •  Industrial engineers with sustainable impact: the students will be able to find jobs in Industrial/ Mechanical/ Production/ Automation/ Aerospace/ Energy/ or Management Engineering
  • Researchers in industry: the students will have plenty of opportunities to carry on their studies as PhD among one of the numerous international laboratories of the SIE partners (full members or associates) and the research community in the sustainable manufacturing domain.
