Goals


Presenting models and tools for solving problems of company location and transport management in a supply chain.

This course presents two aspects: strategic design of a distribution network in a supply chain and tactical-operational aspects of network management.

For each aspect the course develops two key points:

• in network design, the choice of location and the establishment of services (production site, warehouse, logistics platform) and the synthesis of the transport network (connections / roads between production sites, warehouses, logistics centres)

• in network management, planning and modes of distribution transport (planning delivery rounds, number and types of vehicles).

Content


This course will develop the problems of logistics in transport by studying the following two points of view:

• Firstly, on one hand, a socio-technical and economic analysis on freight transport issues and the strategies of company location (accessibility to transport infrastructure, logical agglomeration e.g. concerning the type of local activities and the workforce structure) and on the other hand, identifying and measuring costs such as transportation, workforce, land/property taxes and work organisation, plus the potential benefits or urban effects such as industrial areas, technology parks, innovative environments and learning economies.

• Secondly, a quantitative analysis based on Operation Research Methods which support optimisation and decision-making. For each of the three problem areas: location, delivery rounds and network design, students will study both modelling and techniques for accurate resolution (Branch-and-Bound) plus techniques for approximate resolutions (Lagrangian relaxation , metaheuristics) and how they are set up in commercial software (OPL-CPLEX Studio, Excel solver), or free software (COIN, lp-solve) or ad-hoc.

Prerequisites


All the courses given in the 1st and 2nd years on Production Management, Inventory Control, Algorithms, Applied Mathematics and Operations Research (simulation and optimisation).

Tests


Written exam (1/2 of the final mark) and project (1/2 of the final mark).
