Goal(s)

On completion of this course, students will be able to contribute to the development of a research project. The aim of this course is to:
• understand a scientific research problem and identify one or more scientific obstacles,
• position themselves in relation to the scientific literature and identify their contributions to the state of the art
• know how to present a scientific argument, carry out a scientific and/or technological development and defend it.

The aim of the Research Initiation Project is to give students the opportunity to learn about research on a topic of their choice. They can take part in a research activity in a laboratory throughout the second semester.

Content(s)

Organisation:
Each project (normally individual, but occasionally 1 pair permitted) is supervised by one or more researchers from one of the school’s partner laboratories. The organisation of the supervision is worked out with the researchers involved. A subject may also be proposed by a student to a researcher.
The student(s) present(s) the results obtained during a public presentation as well as through a written document defined in agreement with the researcher(s) in charge of the project. The workload per student is estimated at approximately 76 hours. Ideally, students should have an interview, even a brief one, with their supervisor every week.

Assignment of subjects:
A student interested in a subject must contact the corresponding researcher. Once the researcher has agreed to supervise a student (or possibly a pair of students), he/she must inform the head of the UE.
Students can also contact researchers directly to find a subject that is not on the list of proposed subjects, and whose research topics interest them.

Test

  • Specific credits: this course brings 6.0 ECTS to students in Semester 8 M1 GI program GID
  • Specific credits: this course brings 3.0 ECTS to students in Semester 8 M1 GI program SIE

Evaluation session 1:

  • a restitution document in the format suggested by the tutor (E1)
    The restitution document should be discussed as soon as possible with the researcher(s) supervising the project. It may be a written document such as a ‘conference paper’ in the field, a methodological report, or a document presenting a protocol and experimental results if the work includes significant practical aspects (development, experiments, etc.).
  • Oral presentation to a jury to assess the substance of the work (T)
    Compulsory oral presentation: approximately 30 minutes (15 minutes presentation + 15 minutes questions and answers). The length of the presentation depends on the number of students involved in the project. The oral presentation is expected to be of the ‘research’ type. You will have 15 minutes for your presentation, followed by questions. The jury will not necessarily be made up of specialists in the field you have studied. At the end of the presentation, the members of the jury, even non-specialists, must have understood the question you were asked, the approach you took to answer it, and the significance of the results you obtained.

N1=(E1+T)/2
This weighting is compatible with the organisation of distance learning courses and examinations.
Evaluation session 2 (E2):
The assessment is based on a new version of the restitution document or a new oral presentation.
N2 = E2
N1 = final mark session 1
N2 = final mark session 2

In the context of this course, a student’s attendance record may have an impact on the calculation of the continuous assessment grade: for example, a penalty for absence, which may go as high as a zero in session 1 in the case of repeated absences, etc.).
